Rescue Droid

By: Chris Winstone

Description

Play as a rescue droid in a remote research facility that is activated during emergencies to rescue survivors.

About the Prototype (demo walkthrough)

This prototype is a small vertical slice of the game that is meant to show basic functionality. Find the two survivors in the scene (represented by white unity cylinders) and inform them to make their way to the escape pods. One survivor is trapped behind a closed door which requires power to open. You must jump start the generator found in another room and turn it on to provide power to the doors in the scene (instructions below). The other survivor is trapped behind a fire. The droid can move through the fire freely, but survivors are squishy and cannot (or probably could, but only once…). Use the built-in extinguisher in the droid to put out the fire so the survivor can make their way to the escape pods.

How to Play

  • Click the ground with LMB (Left Mouse Button) to move the droid
  • Zoom in/out with the mouse wheel
  • Press F to toggle your flashlight
  • Press ‘E’ when prompted to interact with some objects in the world
  • Generator mini game: Click with LMB to increase charge, represented by the fill in the bar. Get the energy level to the green area and hold it there for a few seconds. The fill will turn green when it is in the correct area. This will fix the generator and allow you to turn it on with ‘E’

Known Issues

  • When the fire is put out, the survivor continues, but “jumps” due to this behavior being controlled by an Off Mesh Link. I did not have time to look for a solution for this and decided it was acceptable for the prototype.
  • I did not have time to put in objects that block the player but not the survivors, but the functionality would be the same as the fire used in the demo.
  • The hint text on the generator is the wrong color.
  • The generator mini game green area does not match up with the window in the code. This game is just a stand in and would be changed substantially, so the values are hard coded and not connected to the green window that is displayed.

The Theoretical Plan

If I were to continue work on this project (which I don’t plan on, but might be fun later) my plan moving forward would include the following:

  • Design and implement different obstacles using the framework in place
  • Add Machine Learning (XP) system, awarding xp to the player for completing tasks and allowing the player to spend this xp on upgrades that would allow them to interact with additional objects in the world. For example, a welder tool that allows the player to seal leaking pipes.
  • Respawn system. The player gets X lives and can expend one to have a new droid with the same specs (upgrades) “printed” at the droid base station.
  • Gather remaining SFX and music
  • Design and create multiple levels
  • Implement save/load system
  • Droid customization (custom materials to customize the look of the droid)
